I had thought about having a website, it simply made sense to me to be on the Internet.
The Internet is a pretty big place, I asked myself why I should go fish in a pond, when I could fish in the ocean, so Off I went looking for a way to make a living from it.
My first problem was that I didn't even know what the first step was. So I did what I always do, I remained open and flexible and started to study what other people where doing to make money by using the Internet.
The hunt for Lego
Lego is pretty cool. I remember we use to have a yard bag full of parts that my brother and I use to splatter on the floor and play for hours.
I always thought it was cool that you could open the bag and by following a sequence of steps, you ended up with a cool toy.
Building an online business is like Lego, you use a combination of building blocks, follow a series of steps and put together a business model.
Like most, I started with a blog. I listened to the instructors at my coaching school and proudly announced myself to the World - "Hello, this is my first post!"
Great, I have a blog...now what?
I was facing a big puzzle, I needed a way to put the pieces together, a system to build myself a website, something that I could build block by block, like Lego.
What I found
A lot of people believe that it's really important to have a website. I have to agree, it is critical. You can't afford to not have one.
Billions of people on the web every day, a minute ago millions just logged on for the first time in their lives.
It's pretty easy to get yourself a blog, with a little effort you can even make a website. But being able to bring everything together for an online business is quite a feat.
Believe me, I've gone after plenty of e-business success promises. Most of them are full of hot air. I realized that - like building a business - it was going to take a lot of work.
The reason why I'm writing this article is because I believe that having a website is the single most important action you can take to build a business online and make money at it.
That being said, it's also one tough cookie to crack. You just have to keep hammering at it.
Follow a path
"If you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there...”
Welcome to the jungle, it's very easy to get lost here. Take Lewis Carroll's advice and figure out where you're going or you will end up nowhere.
That's what I did, or rather I happened to follow a path that lead me to
Site Build It!
I was rather skeptical at first, I probably visited their website over a dozen times before I actually made a decision.
What really won me over was that they had a method, and years after it's a method that is still working for me.
I know it works, it works for me...
This website has allowed me to market myself, get new clients, communicate with existing clients, showcase my expertise and ideas.
The fundamental reality of the way people use the Web
What did you do on the web today? Were you just surfing around haphazardly or were you looking for something specific?
Most people answer "something specific..."
The fundamental reality of how people use the Web is that no one "passes by." They search for "information, information, information."
Site Build It!
understands this. In fact, they built an online business building system around it.
Content
Web users search for information, for solutions. They are not looking for you - they don't know you (yet!). They seek what you know. And you have to give it to them. Convert your knowledge into in-demand Content. To succeed online, start where they start - at "the search."
Traffic
Your topical content ranks high at the Search Engines (ex., Google, Yahoo! MSN), attracting free, targeted (i.e., interested), open-to-you visitors. Basically, these future customers "meet you" at your site. These visitors are known as "Traffic."
PREsell
Complete strangers develop trust and confidence in you. Why? You "PREsell" by OVERdelivering what they seek... relevant, original, information.
Deliver it in your own voice, in your own way. Go beyond merely instilling confidence... your visitors will like you. (Immediate "selling" on Web sites is ineffective unless you have a brand like Amazon.)
Monetize
Convert warm, willing-to-buy ("PREsold") visitors into income. Called "Monetizing," this is the easy part. But "M" cannot happen if you fail to first execute C T P. This is where 99% of small businesses fail.
C T P is the motor that drives "M." SBI! delivers the motor, and the Monetization.
Once you have your own PREsold traffic, you are in control. Blend in multiple streams of revenue, not just one.
The main benefit that I've found, is that it's a great place to learn about what it takes to build a successful online business. It keeps you focused on the path.
It also gives you the tools you need:
Domain name registration
Web site hosting
Point-and-click page creation
Content management
Blogging
Market research
Traffic stats
Search engine optimization
Auto-responders
Form builder
Graphic manager
Customizable templates
Sitemaps
RSS feeds
Web mail
Newsletter management
You may not know what these are right now, but you will. You'll need to know what they are to be successful online.
