5 Costly Mistakes That You Should Avoid In Initial Coaching Sessions

Some time ago, I shared with subscribers of What-IS-Coaching, 5 costly mistakes that coaches tend to make in their initial sessions.

The reason why knowing about them is important, is because although offering a free initial coaching session is one of the best ways for potential coaching clients to experience being coached, and then to get them to sign up to work with you, most coaches tend to get them wrong and end up turning away clients.

If you know the pitfalls, then it’ll it make it easier for you to avoid them. And, while there isn’t any cookie-cutter approach to a free session because every situation is different, it does help to have a big-picture process that you can follow.

Let me share one of the mistakes that coaches make:

“Dear Coach,

Most of us have been there…

Trying desperately to get off the phone with some jerk that wants to get you to sign up for the latest phone, cable, credit card deal…

No matter what you tell them, the pesky critters just keep on coming back with something to keep you on the phone.

What’s your gut reaction with someone like this?

Nine bucks gets ten that you’re wishing your phone came with a pushy salesman recognition app.

Yet, there are a lot of coaches that keep on making the same mistake.

Being too aggressive, or pushy, or even worse…needy!

It just comes off as freakish.

And, no matter what you do the stink of neediness won’t wash off.

What you should do instead is, if you feel the need to push the sale, is to step off the gas and relax.

Just slow down…

Bite your tongue. Keep it shut. Think about something else. Do whatever you have to do to fight the urge to push the sale.

Selling coaching is one of those things where you’re much better off focusing on building the relationship first and foremost rather than in looking for the sale.

There is a time to ask for the commitment but certainly not (for the most part) in the initial session. When you try to force the sale, more times than not you will end up pushing your potential client away.

Instead, have a conversation. Find out the reason WHY that person has approached you. Think about this last part again, they’ve already shown interest in what you’re offering, now it’s up to you to find out why they’re there. It’s probably not because they think you’re great, but rather because they have a problem they believe you might be able to help them with.”
